Advent

Advent is upon us, there are many good web sites to study along with and prepare your heart for Christmas.  While we acknowledge this is not the accentual day of the Birth of Christ it is the day Christians have chosen to celebrate the birth of our savior.
The Lord is Coming, is he in your heart

Veterans Day

Thank you Veterans

Veterans Day

Do you recall in years gone by,
When we used to pause and pray.
For those Americans who gave their lives?
We called it Armistice Day.
The 11th Hour of the 11th Day,
Of the 11th month of the year,
Was set aside to honor those,
Who fought for liberty.
It was called the "War to End All Wars,"
And they died for you and me.
Now, we call it Veterans Day,
To honor all those who served.
Surely, we can do no less,
For their deeds are well deserved.
But where now are the parades,
The marching bands and such?
If you care, then tell a friend,
And join in this Veterans Day.
Make the occasion special;
It shouldn't be made a chore,
For those you have come to honor,
Once cherished peace and not war.
Some now lay in hallowed ground,
For they paid the ultimate price.
Why not then, take the time to visit?
Surely, you can make this sacrifice.
So, whenever you meet a veteran,
Especially on Veterans Day,
Just wave, acknowledge him, or even better yet,
Why not shake his hand and say,
"Thank you for all that you have done,
To keep this nation free."
And to all who have served before us,
Who treasured liberty,
Once Armistice Day, now Veterans Day,
Just let us never, ever forget,
To pay our respects to all who served;
This nation will forever be in their debt!

Why Universities Would Never Give God a PhD

"Why Universities Would Never Give God a PhD"
1. He had only one major publication.
2. It was in Hebrew.
3. It had no references.
4. It wasn't published in a refereed journal.
5. Some even doubt he wrote it by himself.
6. It may be true that he created the world, but what has he done since then?
7. His cooperative efforts have been quite limited.
8. The scientific community has had a hard time replicating his results.
9. He never applied to the ethics board for permission to use human subjects.
10. When subjects didn't behave as predicted, he deleted them from the sample.
11. He rarely came to class, just told students to read the book.
12. Some say he had his son teach the class.
13. He expelled his first two students for learning.
14. Although there were only 10 requirements, all of his students failed his tests.
15. His office hours were infrequent and usually held on a mountain top.
16. No record of working well with colleagues.

History!

His-Story
History According to God

"Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows on them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble." - Isaiah 40:21-24

God is the creator of History, the bible is His-Story of how he created the world and when!

Genealogy

Genealogy is an interesting thing.  With it we get all kinds of information.  When you go to the doctor they want to know your genealogy, OK not specifically but they ask for a family history.

Genealogy also ties us to events.  My grandfather did a wagon train survey in 1920 from Rawlins Wyoming to Rock Springs Wyoming.  Hard to believe they were doing wagons then but we are so accustom to cars now.  This shows us how history has changed.

Genealogy ties us to places geographically.  I was born and raised in Illinois.  My relatives are from east of there and my Great Grandfather came over from Germany.  I also know he was a hat maker.

Genealogy also gives us History.  When we look at the bible there are what seems like endless genealogies in the bible.  These are there to tie events together.

Creation starts and on day 6 the first man is created, then his wife is created from his rib.  Adam and Eve sin and are cast out of the Garden.  Adam is later refereed to as the "First Adam", he has son's and daughter's and they have children, .... to Noah.
Noah was a faithful man who loved God when no one else seemed to. Noah had sons and built and ark to save mankind.  Then we move through the genealogies past Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob.  Then down to David..
Then Jesus is born and the New Testament takes us from David to Jesus through both Mary and through Joseph.

All this helps to give us a time line of events along the way.  Archeology helps to date these events as well.  Adding it all up and James Ussher came up with a year of 4004 BC for the creation of the world.

This through Genealogy and archeology to verify events and dates.

SO genealogy helps us confirm creation being about 6000 years ago and taking 6 days.

God confirms this when he gives us the ten commandments.

Exodus 20:8-11
8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11  For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

I take His word over man's belief in evolution every time.  He is Lord, He was there, He created all things.

BSA National Jamboree

Well the Boy Scout of America National Jamboree is under way.  Now the 7th largest city in Virginia this event has brought in a population of 45,000.

News just out President Obama just let the Jambaree know (Monday) that he wont make the already commited Wednesday Opening.  Seems he decided to do an epesode of "The View" instead.  He says youth are impoartant and misses a chance to prove it and in fact does the oposite boy not keeping a commitment.

So this is the last even the BSA will have at Fort AP Hill.  Seems they are tired of fighting all the separation of church and state (not in the constitution by the way) folks and are moving on finally.  A disappointment to the military as well as the BSA.

So you can follow them on facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/QBSA-Radio-2010-National-Scout-Jamboree/348788178974

Mountains

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth ... from everlasting to everlasting you are God.  Psalm 90:2

God created the mountains!

Romans 1:19-21
since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.  For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

What is your excuse today?  Why not turn to the creator of the universe and all that is in it?

Hear the word of God, Believe it is true, Repent of your sin (rebellion against God), Confess your Sins to God, and be baptized for the remission of sin and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

CONVERSION

This comes from a great tract that has been around for a long time.

CONVERSION
The Bible teaches a rational plan of salvation. Do what Jesus and the apostles commanded and you will be saved. The Scriptures do not teach us to look for lights and signs and listen for strange voices, and expect to be picked up bodily. The religion of Jesus is intended for all the people, and is made so plain that all the people can understand it. Conversion is simply a change. Yes - a change of the heart. The Bible says we think and reason with the heart, that is, the intellect (Luke 9: 47; Mark 2: 8). It says we love and hate with the heart; that is, the affections (Matthew 6:19, 21). We purpose with the heart; that is, the will (2 Corinthians 9: 7). It says the heart condemns and approves; that is the conscience (1 John 3: 20, 21).

So when a person is converted they are completely changed in intellect, in affections and will. Having done his duty, and hence the heart or mind approves of what has been done, and the conscience is at ease. Faith changes his way of thinking; repentance his will, and baptism his state; and all combined change his relation toward God, and make him a Christian. A person who hears the gospel, believes on Christ, repents of his sins, confesses Christ, and is baptized into Christ is a Christian. They met Christ where Christ promised to meet them. They must then continue faithful unto death and a person will receive a crown of life.

Faith Only?

I was listening to comments on "Faith Only" and then the person refers to Acts 17 and repentance. So it brought up some thoughts.

While I agree in principle with the statement I disagree in what Faith Only looks like.

Using Paul's “sermon” from Acts 17, specificity this verse:

Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,

Which always brings me back to the basic question of “what must we do” to be saved and a key verse for me is always from Acts and Peter's response to the quest:

Act 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Repentance and Baptism were key for Peter for Salvation.

Paul says in Romans 10:8-10:

But what does it say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

For Paul “confession is made unto salvation”

James says “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!” (James 2:19). Which to me says to say “Faith Only” is not enough.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to put works into faith but I think if we put forward Faith Without Action then I think faith can be empty and meaningless.

So the real question is what must a person do to be saved?

Does a person need to just believe Jesus died on the cross and rose again on the third day for the sins of the world and that is it? Do they need to “confess” their sins? Do they need to “repent”?

Heaven forbid I bring up this one but do they need to be baptized? What is the purpose of baptism. I think the bible is clear it unites us with Christ, but I think it is also clear it is the point we join with Christ and the point we have our sins washed away. (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; Rom 6:3; Gal 3:27; Eph 4:5; Col 2:12; 1 Peter 3:21). Also baptism is required for membership at some church's who accept faith only. If it is truly faith only for salvation then why should they require more than God for membership into his church?

One of my favorite passages is from Acts chapter 8. The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch. Philip preaches in such a way that the eunuch ask :See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”. I find this amazing because Philip than has to ask “If you believe with all your heart, you may”. I wonder if you have ever preached a sermon on salvation such that the question is why can't I be baptized before the question of faith comes up? Where is baptism in our salvation message? I enjoy this passage because it reminds me of my own journey and at the point I believed and asked to be baptized (where we were at the time) I was not asked if I believed but told I was not ready. In shock I left that group and found a better bible believing church in which I was baptized about a month later. To me baptism is the last step of a believing faith, not something I do but something I submit to, and not the first step of a believer.

Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess, be Baptized!

I recently read the “Hard to Believe: The High Cost and Infinite Value of Following Jesus” by John MacArthur. In the book he struggles with his view of predestination and free will but the emphasis of the book is that “Faith Only” may not be a saving faith. Faith that does not change and call to action is a faith that is not enough.

Since the bible says we are responsible for spreading the word of God it becomes an important question to ask what must we teach. Ezekiel 3:18-19 for example puts unbelievers blood on our hands if we do not explain the gospel correctly and they are not saved.

So I ask the question what must a person do to be saved? What should we teach for salvation?

Just believe, believe what? "Believe in Jesus" and say a little prayer?

Not that I question what I believe but how much I can tone it down to still fall within the guise of the local church belief system as it were while still being faithful to scripture. Paul himself says he is told to "Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord". I also believe that as Paul wrote in the NT he wrote from the belief that all believers were baptized and there was no such thing as an unbaptized believer. If someone ask me about baptism I have to use scripture to point out I believe it is necessary for salvation. I know that does not fit with some churches and so I ask the question.

So I ask the question what must a person do to be saved? What should we teach for salvation?

Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess, be Baptized!

Then be faithful to Christ!

The Tree with Nothing to Offer But Rot

The Tree with Nothing to Offer But Rot

Genesis 1:11b

Then God said, 'Let the earth bring forth the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth'; and it was so.

The chempedak tree is found in Malaysia. It is closely related to jackfruits in the mulberry family. The chempedak tree produces edible fruits that are about a foot long.

Researchers studying the chempedak were surprised to discover that they bloom irregularly. One tree was watched by researchers for five years before it bloomed! While the flowers smell like watermelon, they offer no nectar to entice pollinating insects. Moreover, the insects that do pollinate the chempedak tree do not eat any of the pollen. What, then, attracts the two species of gall midges that pollinate the flowers? The answer: a fungus that attacks only the male flowers of the tree. The midges like to eat the fungus, so they crawl on the male flowers as they eat the fungus, picking up pollen. Then they go to the clumps of female flowers looking for more fungus, inadvertently pollinating them. This arrangement in which the tree depends entirely on a fungus to attract pollinators is unknown in any other species. This raises the question of how such an arrangement could have evolved. Without both the midges and the fungus, the first chempedak tree would have been the last. All three elements in this interrelated system had to have come into being at the same time.

The chempedak tree bears witness to a rapid creation of the interdependent plant and insect world where living things had to wait, at most, mere days for the other creatures it depends on to come into existence, just as Genesis reports.

Prayer: Dear Father, with the creation I will bear witness that You are Creator. Amen.

Ancient Meteorologists Predicted El Niño

Ancient Meteorologists Predicted El Niño

Genesis 1:14

Then God said, 'Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years….'

El Niños have been periodically changing the weather patterns of North and South America for thousands of years. El Niños in the Andes result in a four to six week delay in the rain needed for the potato crops on which ancient farmers depended. They even knew ahead of time when to wait to plant their potatoes for best results.

Between June 13 and 24 of each year, these farmers would search the early dawn sky for the invisible signs of an El Niño. The warm El Niño waters cause more moisture to accumulate in the atmosphere. Some of this moisture forms invisible cirrus clouds high in the atmosphere. While invisible, these clouds would cause some of the more dim stars to disappear. So the Andean farmers looked to the northeastern horizon to find the Pleiades. If all seven stars, including the dimmest of them, shone clearly morning after morning, the Andean farmers knew that no El Niño was forming. However, if they consistently saw a dimming of the stars, they knew that they should delay planting for four to six weeks because the rains would be late.

Where would the Andean farmers learn the signs and consequences of an El Niño for their crops? The Bible teaches that the sun, moon and stars also serve to give us signs about the seasons. It would appear that God originally gave Adam the ability to read these signs, knowledge which Adam would have passed down to future generations.

Prayer: I praise You, Lord, for the entire creation shows Your handiwork. Amen.

He is Risen!

Easter was GREAT!
He is Risen, He is Risen Indeed!
We had a great time over Easter, visited our son in Rapid City!  Went down to Mount Rushmore on Saturday and enjoyed the snow in the Black Hills, such as it was.  Maybe I'll put a photo or two up later.

We went to church at First Christian Church in Rapid City on Easter Morning and had a wonderful time worshiping the risen Lord with fellow believers in Christ.

He is Risen, He is Risen Indeed

Sunshine

Today the sun is shining!  Many times sun shines in our lives and we are to busy to notice.  Take time to smell the roses!

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

It's Friday (not really) But Sunday is Coming (yes really)

Easter is coming!  But before Easter can come Friday must come. They call it good Friday but in reality it was not such a good day if you were around back then.  They took Jesus and tortured him at length, would have killed most men and usually did, then they hung him on a cross to die a slow death.

First however we celebrate Palm Sunday.  The day we use to celebrate the beginning of the end.  Jesus road into town on a donkey, to prove who he was.  He met with old friends and old enemies during the week and was then put on a mock trial where all his friends left him and denied him.

They killed him, buried him and hoped for the best.  But it did not end there (SUNDAY IS COMING!)

1 Corinthians 15:3-8
3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Peter,[b] and then to the Twelve. 6After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

He's ALIVE!  He's Alive and I'm forgiven!

Sad Day

This is a sad day in the united states, health care has passed.  The dem's have used scrupulous rules to achieve what the majority do not want.
How horrible this is!
The untold debt, correuption, and other horrors yet to be visited upon our country because of this bill will only be known for sure in the future.
But the fact that our president lied to us will be seen shortly as taxes start to go up to cover this monster!
IN THIS TIME OF ECONOMIC CRISIS we DO NOT NEED THIS!

Frustration

Frustrated with my "home church".  It is not the first church of choice but in this town it is the closest to what I biblically believe and most of the time the are biblically grounded.
I learned this weekend though that they will not be doing communion on Easter Sunday.  Normally they only do communion on the first Sunday of the month.  I was looking forward to taking communion on Easter Sunday.

I can not think of any reason (ok any good reason) they would move communion from Easter to some other Sunday.  I can think of a lot of bad reasons but no good ones.

So our family has decided that on this Easter we will attend another church that will honor both the risen Lord and Communion, even if that means traveling out of town.

If any one is reading this I would welcome comments on this topic and what you think about it.

What Day Is it

March 1st or February 29?  What day is it really?
If it were a leap year it would be February 29.
So how do you celebrate your birthday if you were truly born on Febrary 29?
Are you really only one year old instead of 4 if your birthday only comes around once every 4 years?
A friend of mine had a birthday party on his "40'th" birthday, they put 10 candles on his cake to celebrate his 10th birthday.
So do you have to wait until you are "64" (16 leap year birthdays) to get a drivers license? So if they just count years do you get to go in on March 28th to take the test (the same month) or do you have to wait until March 1st (the technical day after your birthday) to get your license?

It all brings in interesting things to think about, and why I am glad I was not born on leap day.
So to my friends who celebrate Feb 29th as their birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY (a day late?).

General Notes

So what are General Notes?
I would say it could be comments on anything or nothing at all.
Thinking about what is good and not so good, just wondering what should be written or not written.

Listening but not intently to things going on around me.

Things Others have Learned!

I like it when older more experienced Christians share what they have learned in life. With that I found this article rather interesting.

What I Have Learned in 50 Years as a Theologian (Part 1)
by Jack Cottrell, 2/7/2010
Thus I affirm today that after doing theology for 50 years, I am more convinced than ever that the following (often-challenged) doctrines are TRUE:
1. The Bible is God’s inerrant Word.
2. The only true God is the Creator-God of the Bible.
3. The transcendent Creator-God knows the future, even future freewill choices.
4. Human beings do have truly free will; Calvinism is false.
5. Jesus is the only Savior, and salvation comes only by knowing and accepting him as such.
6. The Holy Spirit does not give miraculous gifts today.
7. Demonic spirits are real and active today, even in Christian circles and in some Christians.
8. Sinners are saved by grace, through faith, in baptism, for good works.
9. Baptism in water is the point of time when God gives the saving grace of forgiveness through Christ’s blood and regeneration through the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
10. The Bible does not permit women to teach men, nor to have authority over men, in the church.
11. There is no such thing as a secret rapture.
12. The lost will suffer eternally in Hell.
13. The church is intended to be “the pillar and support of the truth” in this world of falsehood and relativism (1 Timothy 3:15).

A new book on Geology is out, should be good

Earth's Catastrophic Past by Andrew Snelling

Keywords: grand-canyon radiometric-dating geology fossils author-andrew-snelling
Price: $59.99
Format: 2 Hardcovers
Pages: 1128

Finally, the long-awaited update to the Morris/Whitcomb classic, The Genesis Flood! This huge 2-volume set is filled with up-to-date geological evidence that demonstrates the authority and accuracy of the Bible’s account of creation and the Flood. Step by step, geologist Dr. Andrew Snelling examines evolutionary interpretations of the geologic record and deconstructs the misplaced assumptions and conclusions on which those interpretations are based. With in-depth scholarly research and insight, he then constructs a biblical geologic model for earth history and concludes that the claims of Genesis 1–11 are true. Topics covered include:

* The biblical record of the Flood
* Arguments used against the global Genesis Flood
* Noah, the Ark, and the animals
* The framework for a scriptural geology
* A biblical geologic model of earth history

Happy New Year

Another year gone, wow. I would not say I have profound thoughts for the new year but it does give you a chance to sit back and ponder past and future events, maybe that is the whole point of a new year.
So lets move forward with gusto and if we get it wrong at least we can say we tried.

God Bless and may the new year find you drawing closer to the Lord Jesus Christ.
